How to play on the shore

Beach bingo suits the long middle of a beach day, when the first rush of swimming has passed and children begin to wander. Tuck cards into a beach bag and hand them out once towels are laid down.

  1. Give each child a card and a clip so wind does not carry it off.
  2. Squares are covered when the sight is real: a live crab, a shell in the hand or a boat on the horizon.
  3. For animals and objects found on the sand, children bring the item, or point it out, to an adult for approval.
  4. Shells and pebbles can be collected for covering squares, but living creatures stay in the water.
  5. First to a full row earns a snack or a swim buddy turn.

Beach day twists

  • Treasure tray. Instead of crayons, cover each square with a real shell or stone and arrange the card as a collection tray for a keepsake.
  • Rainy day beach. Play at home with pictures of the sea, a blue blanket and a bucket, calling out squares for a pretend beach picnic.
  • Photo bingo. Older children take pictures with a parent's phone instead of covering squares, then review the album at dinner.

Sand, sun and a few cautions

Remind children to look but not touch jellyfish, even washed up ones, and to leave live sand crabs and starfish alone. Squares can be covered with a distance sighting.

Check local rules on taking shells, since some protected shores restrict it. A photograph fills a square just as well.

Apply sunscreen before the game starts and stop for water breaks. Children focused on a bingo card forget to drink.

Printing for salt, sand and wind

Use sturdy paper and put the card in a gallon bag to survive sunscreen and wet fingers. A clothespin on the corner stops the breeze from stealing it.

Choose one or two cards per page and ink saver for the outdoors. Light grids print cleanly and are legible in bright glare.

FAQ

Can I play beach bingo at a lake or pool?

Yes. Remove tide and sea squares such as lighthouse or crab and add lake items like ducks, canoes and floating docks.

What ages is beach bingo for?

Children from about four can play with help. For preschoolers, use a three by three grid and read the squares aloud.

How do I keep kids from wandering off while they search?

Set a boundary such as between two umbrellas and play near an adult. The squares are all visible within that stretch of shore.
