What you can change on each page

The word list, the grid size and the direction of the words are all in your hands. Younger children do best with words that run across and down only, and a small grid. Older students and adults can switch on diagonals and backwards words for a real challenge.

The answer key prints on its own page, so you can keep it back while students solve. Give the puzzle a new title if you want to name a unit, a class or a birthday.

Because the grid is built from a seed, you can share the link to a puzzle and the recipient sees exactly the same one. That makes it easy to hand a puzzle to a co-teacher or a grandparent.

Picking a theme

Frog and pond themes are our home territory: try the frog life cycle and pond animals puzzles for a science lesson that starts with eggs and ends with tadpoles.

Seasonal puzzles such as Christmas and Halloween arrive when you most need them, and subject puzzles on weather, the solar system and the human body support classroom units all year.

If you need something exact, open the word search maker, paste in your own spelling list, and let it place the words for you. It checks that every word fits before it prints.

FAQ

Do the word searches come with answers?

Yes. Turn on the answer key option and it prints on a separate page.

What is the best grid size for children?

For ages five to seven, a small grid with 8 to 10 short words is plenty. Increase the size as children grow in confidence.
