How to play bug bingo outdoors
Bug bingo is best played in a patch of garden or park. Give each child a card, a hand lens if you have one, and a bit of time to flip over stones and peer under leaves.
- Hand out the cards and agree on the search zone.
- Children cover a square when they find a minibeast, alive and left where it was.
- Crawling creatures can be watched in a clear container for a moment, then released.
- If a child sees a bug from the list on a flower, ask them to describe it before covering the square.
- The first full line wins, and everyone shares what they saw.
Three ways to change the hunt
- Classroom version. A caller reads descriptions, such as six legs and glowing tail, and players find the firefly square.
- Sort the card. After the game, children circle the true insects in one color and the other creatures in another.
- Night bugs. At dusk, use a flashlight and a white sheet to see moths, crickets and beetles that come out after dark.
Tips for tiny scientists
Show children how to move gently. A soft paintbrush can nudge a beetle onto a leaf without harm.
Set a rule for stinging insects. Bees and wasps are observed from a distance, and any child with an allergy stays with a grown-up.
Keep a field guide handy. Identifying a creature in the book is a thrilling moment and takes the guesswork out of the game.
Printing for the garden
Use sturdy paper or stick the card on a clipboard so it does not flop while kids crouch. Print on pale green paper for fun.
If you are running a school event, print two to a page and slide them into plastic sleeves that can be wiped after use.
FAQ
Are spiders insects?
No. Insects have six legs and three body parts, while spiders have eight legs and two. Spiders are on the list because children love finding them.
What if we cannot find many bugs?
Play in a different season, check under logs and stones, or use a picture book so every child can still complete a row.
Is bug bingo safe for kids with allergies?
Keep children with insect allergies at a safe distance from bees and wasps, and keep any medication close by. Check with a parent first.
