How to play on the last day
The last day is short on structure and long on emotions. Bingo gives children something to do with their hands while you pack boxes, collect books and hand out report cards.
- Give out cards after the final cleanup, when desks are empty.
- Call squares at a relaxed pace, and let students tell the group when something on their card has happened this year.
- Players cover squares with sticker dots from the supply drawer.
- A completed row earns a pick from the bag of leftover pencils and erasers.
- Finish with a blackout round, where the whole class works on one giant card on the board.
Three ways to end the year
- Memory bingo. Let students fill the center squares with their favorite moments from the year. Swap cards and see who recognizes the memories.
- Field day edition. Make a card of events, such as relay races and water games, and have each team earn a stamp as they take part.
- Wish bingo. Students fill squares with summer plans and goals. They read them aloud, and classmates cover any they share.
Tips for teachers and room parents
Keep it light. Some students are sad to say goodbye and some are thrilled to leave, so give both groups something to smile about.
Have a few spare cards ready for the substitute or aide who joins the room that day. They will appreciate a plan that needs no preparation.
If the cleanup runs long, play a shorter 3x3 version and set a timer for the end of the game.
Printing for a busy final week
Print the cards a few days early, because copiers are often busy at the end of the year. Plain paper is fine, and ink saver keeps the cost down.
Slip a few finished cards into the memory book or send them home as a keepsake of the party.
