How to turn the hunt into the evening
The trick of this hunt is that the finds are the supplies. Children run around collecting blankets, pillows, snacks and a flashlight, and when the list is done, the fort is built, the cocoa is ready and nobody had to be asked to help.
- Choose the fort spot first, usually the living room floor, and clear a space.
- Print the list and send children off in pairs, with a grown-up handling anything hot or high up.
- Every object found is carried to the fort spot and arranged. Blankets go over chairs, lights get clipped on, the stuffed animal takes a seat.
- The talking items, such as the story and the song, are saved for inside the fort.
- Finish with the cocoa and the book with snow on the cover, read aloud by flashlight.
Variations for different nights
- Movie fort. Add a square for picking the film, and treat the popcorn bowl as the finish line.
- Power outage night. Skip the string of lights and the heating pad and lean on flashlights and the glow item. It turns a dark house into an adventure.
- Sleepover. Give each guest a copy and let them collect for their own corner of the fort, then share the song and story items as a group.
- Grandparents' house. The photo of a snowy day and the story from memory become the main events, and the fort can be a couple of blankets on the sofa.
Tips for a calm evening
Start about an hour before bedtime. The hunt burns energy, and the fort is where it winds down.
Let the youngest child claim the coziest spot. The five points at the end are a gift for them.
Keep the drink items for adults to carry. Children can find the mug, the spoon and the marshmallows, and a grown-up brings the hot part.
Keeping a cozy night safe
Use flashlights or battery lights inside the fort, never candles, and keep blankets away from space heaters, fireplaces and lamps that get hot. Only an adult handles hot drinks, kettles and the stove. Check that string lights are cool to the touch and not pinched under chair legs, and leave a clear path to the door in case someone needs to get up in the dark.
Printing for a night in
Checklist layout with shuffle off keeps the talking items at the end, where they belong. Print one copy per child or one for the family. A clipboard helps when the sheet is being filled in by flashlight, and plain paper is fine since nothing leaves the house.
FAQ
How long does the cozy night hunt take?
About 20 to 30 minutes of collecting, and then the rest of the evening in the fort. There is no timer, so slow nights are welcome.
What age is it for?
Children from about 4 can fetch the object items with a grown-up reading the list. The story and song items work for every age, including grandparents.
Do we need a real fireplace or snow?
No. Everything on the list is found indoors, and the window item only asks you to look at the dark outside. A warm apartment in a mild climate works just as well.
