How to play on Halloween
Halloween is the one night of the year when children are out in the dark and delighted about it. A scavenger hunt helps them notice the decorations, and for the shyest ones gives a reason to keep walking between houses.
- Choose where to play: trick-or-treat night with a grown-up, a school party room, or the front yard with decorations you set up.
- Give each child a sheet, a pencil and a flashlight for ticking, and keep a spare for those who lose theirs.
- Walk the route with an adult and tick items as you go. Costumes count, but only if the wearer is happy to be pointed out.
- Wait for the treats to be collected before the sorting begins, then count up who found the most.
- Share the funniest find at the end of the night.
Spooky variations
- Party room hunt. Hide paper bats, plastic spiders and paper ghosts in a room, and give each child a list of what to spot. No walking required.
- Trick-or-treat tally. Add a bar and points for each decoration you see on the route, then compare totals as treats get sorted.
- Friendly monster mash. Add a line to each item where children write what the creature might say. Read them out as the evening winds down.
Tips for a spooky night
Keep the mood playful. A few children will be nervous of the dark, so avoid pushing them toward the scariest decoration.
Add glow bracelets so adults can keep a head count in the dark.
Remove any item you think may upset a particular child, such as skeletons, and replace it with something friendly like a pumpkin.
Safety on Halloween night
Children should go with an adult or in a group with an adult nearby, carry a flashlight and wear reflective strips or light colors. Cross streets at corners, stay on the sidewalk and keep to well-lit streets.
Only visit houses with a light on, never go inside a stranger's home, and check treats with an adult before eating, especially if there are allergies. Choose costumes that do not block vision or trip a child.
Printing for the evening
Print on orange or black paper if you have it, but white is easier to read by flashlight. Use cardstock for a trick-or-treat bag insert, or tape the sheet to the back of a clipboard. Ink saver mode keeps the dark frog stamp light, and a pencil is easier to tick with than a pen when the paper gets damp.
FAQ
Is the Halloween list scary for young children?
It is meant to be playful: ghosts, pumpkins, cats and bats. You can remove any item that might upset a specific child.
Can I use it at a school Halloween party?
Yes. Print a class set, hide paper decorations around the room and let children search in teams. It works well when costumes make a regular lesson hard.
How do I include points?
Points appear after a bar in the list. Rare finds such as a zombie hand carry more points. Delete the numbers if you want a no-scoring game.
