How to use this word search on a farm theme day

Farm words are among the first long lists many children can read, because the animals are familiar and the words are short. That makes this puzzle a friendly first word search for kindergarten and first grade.

  1. Read the animal words aloud together, with a sound for each one if the class is feeling brave.
  2. Hand out the puzzle and let children find the animals first.
  3. Then find the farm things, like tractor, silo and fence, and talk about what each one is for.
  4. Finish with a sorting task: which words are animals, which are buildings or tools, and which are crops?

Not every farm has every animal. Ask children which ones they might see on a dairy farm and which on a vegetable farm.

Three barnyard variations

  • Who lives here. Draw a barn and a pasture and place the animal words in the right spot.
  • Farm to table. Trace where a food such as bread starts, using words like wheat and harvest.
  • Farm trip checklist. Bring the list on a visit to a farm and tick off what you see.

Tips for teachers and parents

For very young children, print a 10 by 10 grid with six words and let them hunt with a grown-up. A big finger works better than a pencil.

If you are visiting a working farm, follow the farm's rules and ask before petting any animal.

Printing tips for farm days

Large, easy grids work best here. Use the 12 by 12 size and the easy setting, and print with a thicker line so little eyes can follow.

Print a few extra copies, since barnyard visits tend to be muddy. Ink saver mode keeps costs down.
