Using the states puzzle in a geography lesson
Most students learn state names better when they connect each one to a place on a map. The puzzle is a good first pass before that work begins.
- Put a blank or labeled map on the wall where everyone can see it.
- Ask children to find the states closest to where you live, then the farthest ones.
- Every time a state is circled, point to its place on the map.
- Finish by reading the list in order from east to west.
Variations for map lovers
- Region sort. Sort the 25 states into Northeast, South, Midwest and West and color each group.
- Capital pairs. For every state found, add its capital city as a challenge for older students.
- Road trip route. Choose five states from the grid, draw a route that connects them, and estimate the number of days to drive it.
Tips for teaching state names
Several state names are famously tricky to spell, such as Mississippi, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Write them on the board in syllables before students begin.
If you have students who have moved from other states or countries, invite them to share what they know about the places they lived. That adds real stories to the list.
Printing tips for social studies
Print on the back of an old map worksheet to save paper. The default grid is 16 by 16, so the 13-letter state fits comfortably, but a 15 by 15 also works for Massachusetts.
Black-and-white mode is perfect for a classroom set, and the key page can go in your sub folder.
FAQ
Does the puzzle include all 50 states?
No, it holds 25 states from across the country so the grid stays readable. Make a second puzzle with the other 25 by editing the list.
Is the puzzle suitable for third graders?
Yes, with medium difficulty. Choose easy mode if students are just learning to find words in a grid.
How do I add the other states?
Type the state names into the list box, up to about 25 for a 20 by 20 grid, and press Generate.
