How to use this word search at a school party
Classroom Valentine parties are crowded, sticky and loud. A word search gives children something to do between handing out cards and eating cupcakes, and the room settles down while they work.
- Print a puzzle for each child and add a red or pink crayon to their desks.
- Challenge them to find the kindness words first: friendship, kindness, hugs and sweet.
- Ask each child to write one kind thing they could say to a classmate, using one of the words they found.
- Tape the completed puzzles on a bulletin board under the title 'Words We Love'.
At home, the puzzle fits into a family dinner or into a lunchbox as a surprise. Add a hand-written note on the back and it becomes a little gift.
Three sweet variations
- Secret message. Make a custom list from words that spell out a sentence, like 'you are my best friend', and have the puzzle solver read the words in order.
- Valentine postal service. Each child gets a puzzle with the name of a classmate hidden in the grid, and delivers it with a kind note.
- Date night edition. Grown-ups can build a list with shared memories, nicknames and favorite places, then race to see who finishes first.
Tips for teachers and parents
Keep the focus on kindness for children who are shy about romance. The default list does that already, with only a few words from the heart-and-flowers side.
If your school has candy restrictions, drop the chocolate and candy hearts and replace them with words like poem or kindness.
Printing tips for card season
A pink paper sheet looks lovely but can wash out the grid. Print on white paper, and let children add color with markers instead.
If you plan to slip a puzzle into a card, set the page to small output and print two to a sheet, then cut them. A 12 by 12 grid suits a card envelope.
FAQ
What grade is this Valentine's word search for?
It works well from first grade through fourth. Use the easy setting for younger children and add diagonal words for older ones.
Can I include classmates' names?
Yes. Edit the list, add first names, and press Generate. Check the spelling first, since names are easy to get wrong.
Is it okay for a school with no candy rules?
Yes. The default list has only a couple of sweet treats, and you can delete them with one click.
Can adults use this for a date night?
Absolutely. Switch the difficulty to hard, make the grid bigger and swap in personal words.
