How to use a Valentine's Day word scramble

The classroom Valentine's party has a rhythm: cards in, treats out, a game in the middle. A word scramble is a calm game for that middle section and does not involve any running.

  1. Print a sheet per student and put a pencil on each desk.
  2. Explain that the words are all about friendship and kindness, and that being thoughtful is the theme.
  3. Let students solve alone for five minutes, then swap sheets with a neighbor to check.
  4. Read out each answer together, and invite students to say a kind word about a classmate after each one.
  5. Collect the sheets and give small stickers or heart-shaped erasers.

Sweet variations

  • Card swap. Write each solved word on a blank valentine and give it to someone who might like it.
  • Heart code. Choose just six words and ask solvers to turn the first letters into a secret message.
  • Family afternoon. Make two versions, one easy and one hard, and have grandparents and grandchildren swap sheets.

Tips for a kind party

Keep the mood warm and noncompetitive. Put students in pairs rather than rows, and praise effort rather than speed.

Remove any word that feels too romantic for the youngest children, like sweetheart or secret admirer, and keep the friendship words.

The word bank helps children who are new to scrambles and takes the sting out of a difficult word.

Printing for February

Pink or white paper both look good. Printing in black and white leaves room for a child to color a heart in the margin with a crayon. The answer key prints separately, so you can fold it into a notebook until the class has finished.
